Nourishing Bodies, Transforming Lives: Four Decades of Hope at Shepherd’s Table

What does it mean to truly serve your community? For Shepherd’s Table in Silver Spring, it means providing more than just meals – it means offering dignity, hope, and a pathway to self-sufficiency for our most vulnerable neighbors.

As part of our Maryland Stronger Together initiative, Full Sail Media is proud to highlight the extraordinary work of this vital community organization that has been making a difference for over 40 years.

“Shepherd’s Table was formed in 1983, providing three meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and coupling those meals with a wide array of social services to help people get on a pathway toward self-sufficiency,” explains Executive Director Manny Hidalgo.

From its humble beginnings serving seven guests behind First Baptist Church to becoming the largest provider of meals in the DMV, Shepherd’s Table has never missed a day of service in its 40-year history.

Today, the organization serves approximately 600 meals daily at their Progress Place location in downtown Silver Spring, while their innovative Beyond the Table program provides an additional 400 meals to other nonprofits.

“Beyond the Table is something I’m particularly excited about,” Hidalgo shares. “The hope is that we’ll generate enough revenue from selling meals to cover the free meals we give away here at Shepherd’s Table.”

What sets Shepherd’s Table apart is their comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness and food insecurity.

“It’s really important to not just provide free meals, but to figure out if the provision of a free meal is helping somebody get ahead in life,” Hidalgo emphasizes.

In addition to providing daily meals, their services include:

“When people come here, they come here literally broken, hurting, and sometimes emotionally shattered,” Hidalgo says. “They need a safe place to eat and an emotionally safe place where they can be vulnerable.”

Shepherd's Table

The impact of Shepherd’s Table wouldn’t be possible without their dedicated team of 25 staff members and over 3,000 volunteers.

“We’re so blessed to have such a committed volunteer corps, ranging from 13-year-olds to 90-year-olds,” Hidalgo shares. “Most of them come from local faith communities—churches, synagogues, mosques—and they do this as a manifestation of their faith, which is also so beautiful.”

Want to be part of this transformative work? Here’s how you can support Shepherd’s Table:

  1. Volunteer: Sign up through Volunteer Hub on their website for meal service, Resource Center support, or specialized roles
  2. Donate: Support their programs through financial contributions
  3. Spread the Word: Share their story and mission with others
  4. Attend Events: Join their upcoming Table Fest or annual spring gala

As Hidalgo reflects on their impact: “Those are huge victories—getting someone off the street after decades is remarkable. It’s about approaching the process with empathy and respect, while still pushing for the changes our community needs.”

At Full Sail Media, we’re honored to partner with organizations like Shepherd’s Table that demonstrate how consistent, compassionate action can transform lives. Their blend of innovative programming and unwavering dedication shows that when we come together as a community, positive change isn’t just possible—it happens every day, one meal and one person at a time.

Together, we can create a stronger, more compassionate community where everyone has a place at the table.
