Illuminating Hope: IEC Chesapeake’s 40-Year Legacy of Electrical Excellence

What does it take to power the future of our communities?

For IEC Chesapeake (IECC), their valuable work starts at training electricians, but encompasses so much more, including creating pathways to successful careers, fostering industry innovation, and building a sustainable workforce for the Mid-Atlantic region’s growing electrical needs.

As part of our Maryland Stronger Together initiative, Full Sail Media is excited to highlight this exceptional organization that has been lighting the way in electrical education and workforce development for over 40 years.

We recently spoke with Jenny Boone, Vice President of Communications and Sales at IECC, who shared insights into their mission, impact, and vision for the future.

“We are an accredited nonprofit whose core mission is the education of electrical apprentices, providing the four-year instruction for a Journey Worker’s license,” explains Jenny Boone, who has been with the chapter for fourteen years.

Since its founding in 1982, IEC Chesapeake has grown into one of the largest chapters of the National Independent Electrical Contractors Association, representing over 200 member companies and more than 50,000 electrical professionals across Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, and the panhandle of West Virginia.

What sets IECC apart is their commitment to accessible, comprehensive education. Their programming has evolved to meet the changing needs of the industry and their students:

  • Fifteen “brick and mortar” locations across five states
  • E-Apprenticeship program offering online learning since 2013
  • School to Apprenticeship programs connecting K-12 students to career opportunities
  • Specialized training in emerging technologies like solar and renewable energy
  • Continuing education programs for licensed professionals

“One of our largest challenges has been the lack of understanding the public has about the education of electricians and the huge scope of the electrical industry,” Boone notes. “We met this challenge by making a large commitment to social media blogging and posting on a regular basis. We tell the trade story.”

IECC’s influence extends far beyond the classroom. They actively collaborate with:

  • Local schools and educators
  • State legislators
  • Workforce Coalition associations
  • Community colleges
  • Industry partners

Their impact is particularly significant given the current market demands.

“There is a far greater need for electricians than there are people to fill the needs in the next 5 years,” Boone explains. “We’re here to continue training the best of the best.”

As they look ahead to 2025 and beyond, IECC remains focused on growth and expansion. Their goals include:

  • Increasing student enrollment in apprenticeship programs
  • Expanding relationships with school counselors and workforce development professionals
  • Growing their presence on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and into Virginia
  • Continuing to support Independent Contractors with education and resources
